About the species: 

Plasmodai are an alien species made up of sentient ionized gas. Their true form is that of a glowing cloud in deep space. When other species first found them, they were thought to be just plasma, that was readily used as fuel in space ships. When the Plasmodai realized what was happening they quickly moved to try and figure out a way to communicate with these species that were decimating their population. They discovered that they could shapeshift into forms that were similar enough to the alien species to mimic their body language/speech/etc. Now it is illegal to use Plasmodai as fuel, but the practice still happens in deep space where ships aren't regulated, and where there are Plasmodai that refuse to take the shape of other aliens. 

Plasmodai have no sex (male/female), since they reproduce asexually (very rarely, since they don't age or die, but their bodies can be consumed as energy). But many are very interested in shapeshifting and being a part of other species' cultures, this involves choosing an alien shape that may have an inherent sex and possibly choosing a gender to present as. They can use parts of their bodies to power weapons or hand held electronics - they give off ionized gas naturally that doesn't hurt to be consumed - if they're taking a "human" shape this gas is homologous to human hair.

Since they are curious by nature and are usually interested in experiencing various different cultures, they will shapeshift into many different species in one lifetime - the aspects that they keep when they shapeshift are their memories, personality, and general color scheme. Everything else about them will most likely change, shape, size, etc.
